The 27-year-old winger played nine games with the Boston Bruins last season, scoring a goal and two assists for three points. In four NHL seasons, Richards has scored four goals and four assists for eight points in 24 regular-season games with the Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.
Since turning professional, Richards has spent eight seasons in the AHL, scoring 144 goals and 156 assists for 300 points in 481 regular-season games with the Milwaukee Admirals, Chicago Wolves, Syracuse Crunch, Laval Rocket and Providence Bruins.
Before that, he had four seasons in junior with the QMJHL’s Val d’Or Foreurs, where he won a league title in 2013-14. His most productive seasons were in 2014-15 and 2015-16, where he scored 43 and 37 goals, respectively, as well as 91 and 87 points, respectively.
It’s been a busy few days of free agency for the Flyers, a team that last season finished 38-33-11 with 87 points, sixth in the Metropolitan Division. The club signed forward Garnet Hathaway to a two-year contract extension with an AAV of $2.4 million in 2025-26 and 2026-27, as well as re-signing defender Erik Johnson to a one-year, $1 million deal.
One notable item was the club declining to issue a qualifying offer to goaltender Carter Hart.
Hart last played for the Flyers on Jan. 20, 2024, before taking a leave of absence from the club. Hart was one of five members of Canada’s 2018 World Junior Championship team that was accused of sexual assault. The criminal case is still ongoing.
The Flyers have two NHL goaltenders signed to deals in 2024-25 – Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov. They also have Cal Petersen under contract for one more year at $5 million, while prospects Aleksei Kolosov and Carson Bjarnason are on their entry-level contracts. Felix Sandstrom is set to become a UFA on Monday.
