Wolves secured their first win in the Premier League by beating Southampton 2-0 on Saturday (9 November) at Molineux.
Matheus Cunha scored a sensational goal in the second half from 25 yards to settle the nerves, and Gary O’Neil will be relieved to see his side finally pick up all three points.
Cunha also assisted Pablo Sarabia’s opener as the Wolves moved within a safe distance.
The Wolves boss was under loads of pressure ahead of this game, and there were fears that he might lose his job. Instead, the pressure has shifted back to Southampton boss Russell Martin after a ninth loss in 11 games.
Southampton felt that Cameron Archer was fouled in the build-up to Cunha’s strike, but the referee did not see it that way.
BBC pundit drool over Matheus Cunha display for Wolves
Paul Robinson was commentating on the game for BBC Radio Live 5, and he was extremely pleased with Cunha’s stunning goal.
He was left stunned by the beauty of the strike, adding that it took a bit of “magic” from the 25-year-old to seal all three points.
Cunha was also heavily involved in the opening goal. He seized on Kyle Walker-Peters’ header on the halfway line, and slipped it beautifully in the path of Sarabia, who finished it with great aplomb.
Robinson said: “Wolves did not look like getting into the Southampton half, let alone scoring. But it took just a bit of magic from Matheus Cunha, and that second goal has settled them right down.
“What a strike that is from Matheus Cunha! He got the ball and turned, and you just knew he was going to hit it and boy does he. He whips it high, wide, and to the right of Aaron Ramsdale. He’s got no right to score from there.”
What a win for Wolves!
