The Boston Bruins made several roster additions this past off-season, including the big signings of Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov. However, one new Bruin who has been a pleasant surprise early on this season: Joonas Korpisalo.
The Bruins acquired Korpisalo from the Ottawa Senators as a part of the Linus Ullmark trade. There was naturally some concern about the Bruins bringing him in, as he just had a disastrous season in Ottawa. In 55 games, he had a 21-26-4 record, a 3.27 goals-against average (GAA), and a.890 save percentage (SV%).
However, the change of scenery has benefitted Korpisalo immensely thus far. In nine appearances, the 30-year-old has a 5-2-1 record, a 2.45 GAA, and a.907 SV%. He also has two shutouts and has a 4-0-1 record over his last five appearances.
Overall, it is hard to find much to dislike about Korpisalo’s play right now. He has bounced back in a major way since allowing six goals on 35 shots against the Florida Panthers in the club’s season opener. He has simply been one of the Bruins’ rare bright spots early on.
It will be fascinating to see how Korpisalo builds off his hot start as a Bruin from here, but right now, he is red-hot and looking like one of their top summer additions.
