The Boston Bruins are entering the summer with some questions regarding their blueline. With Matt Grzelcyk and Derek Forbort both pending unrestricted free agents, the left side of the Bruins’ defense could end up losing a decent chunk of its depth. Because of this, it would not be all that surprising if the Bruins looked to add a left-shot defenseman to their roster this offseason.
Ideally, it would be good for the Bruins to add another top-four defenseman to their left side. If both Grzelcyk and Forbort walk, they will have a left side of Hampus Lindholm, Mason Lohrei, and Parker Wotherspoon. With the Bruins having high expectations for next season, they would be wise to add another impactful left-shot defender to their group.
Enter Mario Ferraro of the San Jose Sharks.
The Sharks are reportedly open to moving Ferraro for the right price. It is not surprising that he is entering the summer as a prime trade candidate, as he generated a ton of interest this past season. In addition, the Sharks are rebuilding and could get an excellent return for the 25-year-old.
Ferraro became the Sharks’ No. 1 defenseman this season and put together a solid campaign. In 78 games, he posted three goals and a career-high 21 points. He also had an impressive 195 blocks to go along with 124 hits. Overall, the 6-foot defenseman is known for his shutdown ability and can chip in a bit offensively. The Bruins could use somebody like that right now.
While Ferraro plays top-pairing minutes for the Sharks, he would work better on the Bruins’ second pairing if acquired. In addition, he would become a crucial part of their penalty kill because of his steady defensive play. He also would give the Bruins another proven leader, as he is an alternate captain in San Jose.
With Ferraro still being young and having a reasonable $3.25 million cap hit until the end of the 2025-26 season, he is somebody the Bruins should have on their radar this offseason. The potential for him to improve even further playing on a much better team like Boston would also be there.
