According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the New York Rangers are ready to shake up their roster after their ugly 6-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday (Nov. 23). In addition, he mentioned that the Rangers are considering moving Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba.
With the right side of the Bruins’ defense being strong, a player like Trouba likely won’t grab their attention. However, with the Bruins desperately needing a top-six scoring winger, Kreider could be a player worth real consideration.
It’s no secret that GM Don Sweeney likes Kreider as a player. The Bruins were heavily linked to him during the 2019-20 season before he signed an extension with the Rangers in February 2020. With the Bruins having a clear hole in their top six, could Sweeney end up having the Boxford, Massachusetts, native on his radar again? It would be understandable if so.
Kreider has had a bit of a shaky start to the season this season, but he is still putting the puck in the net. In 20 games, he has nine goals, but he has yet to record his first assist of the campaign. However, when noting that he had 39 goals and 75 points in 82 games just last season, he has the potential to heat back up. In his two previous seasons before 2023-24, he also had 36 goals and a career-high 52 goals.
If the Bruins acquire Kreider, he would be more than a rental, as he has a $6.5 million cap hit until the end of the 2026-27 season. Given their current cap situation, the Bruins would need to move out at least one roster player in a potential move.
Nevertheless, it will be fascinating to see if the Bruins once again make a push for Kreider. It’s clear that they could use a scoring winger with an edge like him in their top six.
