The Boston Bruins have made a move, re-signing defenseman Ian Mitchell to a one-year, two-way contract. At the NHL level, he will carry a $775,000 cap hit.
The Bruins acquired Mitchell and Alec Regula from the Chicago Blackhawks last offseason in exchange for Taylor Hall and the UFA rights of Nick Foligno. This was a cap dump move for the Bruins.

Mitchell, 25, appeared in 13 games for the Bruins this season, posting two assists, 10 penalty minutes, and a plus-6 rating. Overall, he was a serviceable call-up option who should continue to be that for the Bruins in 2024-25.
Mitchell proved to be a key part of the Providence Bruins’ blueline this season as well. In 42 regular-season games with Providence, he had six goals to go along with 24 points. He also posted two goals and four points in four playoff games for the Baby B’s.
Overall, with this move, the Bruins are keeping one of their depth guys around. It will be intriguing to see if Mitchell can compete for a spot on the Bruins’ opening night roster from here.
