The Boston Bruins are entering the summer with several free agents. As a result, they have a lot of cap space to work with, and we could see them make some notable changes to their group because of it.
One Bruins free agent who likely played their last game in Boston is veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.
Shattenkirk, 35, was signed to an affordable one-year, $1.05 million contract by the Bruins this past offseason. Overall, he proved to be a solid bargain addition to their group, posting six goals and 24 points in 61 games.
However, with the Bruins adding Andrew Peeke at the deadline, the Bruins’ right side is all set with him, Charlie McAvoy, and Brandon Carlo. In addition, the emergence of Mason Lohrei and Parker Wotherspoon has also made Shattenkirk expendable.
Shattenkirk was also scratched in seven of the Bruins’ 13 playoff games this year. He also did not touch the ice in all six of Boston’s matchups against the Florida Panthers.
While Shattenkirk’s time in Boston is almost certainly over, the New York native did his job as a depth defenseman. He should generate interest on the market because of it.
