Aston Villa are weighing up a possible move for Real Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez, according to a report from Express Sport.
The Villans have been very active in recent weeks, and they are about to complete the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.
Unai Emery is looking to add more quality to his squad as they prepare to compete in the Champions League this season. Everton winger Lewis Dobbin is expected to arrive shortly, and now they have registered an interest in Mendez.
The report (22 June) claims that Villa have made contact with the player’s entourage and inquired about the possibility of leaving Sociedad.
Manchester United, AS Roma and Juventus are also interested in signing Mendez who has a contract at the Spanish club until 2028.
Sociedad want to keep hold of their attacking midfield maestro, but they are not expected to stand in the way if the right offer arrives towards the end of the window.
Brais Mendez is a quality player but Aston Villa may have to wait
After progressing through the youth ranks at Celta Vigo, he finally moved to Sociedad in the summer of 2022. He scored 22 goals in 166 games for Celta.
He has been superb for Sociedad so far. In his first season, he managed 11 goals in all competitions. Last season, he managed eight goals and seven assists in all competitions, including some fantastic performances in the Champions League.
Mendez has been capped four times by the Spain national team, although he has been out of the current first-team picture since 2021. A move to Villa Park could see him play to his fullest potential as he approaches the prime years of his career.
Alex Moreno has impressed at left-back while Pau Torres remains a key figure for Villa. With Emery at the helm, Mendez will not struggle to settle in at Villa Park if he decides to make the move in the summer.
