The Philadelphia 76ers hosted their annual Blue x White scrimmage Sunday afternoon at the Chase Fieldhouse, the home of the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Bluecoats. After the scrimmage, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse met with media members to discuss the day’s events while giving an update on several Sixers.
First up, Tyrese Maxey, who left Friday’s preseason finale in the first quarter after suffering a right thumb contusion. Maxey sustained a hit on the hand by Magic guard Jalen Suggs, and after holding his hand for some minutes, Maxey subbed out, and his night was over. When asked about Maxey, Nick Nurse gave a brief but encouraging update.
“He’s fine,” Nurse said. “Just real precautionary. He got hit on his hand. Nothing there; he’s feeling pretty good.”
Maxey is expected to rejoin the team for tomorrow’s practice session, and his status for Wednesday’s season opener should not be questioned at this time.
As for Sixers rookie Jared McCain, who suffered a pulmonary contusion in last Wednesday’s game against Brooklyn, Nurse had a bit more to say.
“He’s progressed really well. He has got out on the court and moved, and he’s run hard on the treadmill and stuff like that. Nothing more really to say than that. We’ll see how he is tomorrow and whether he rejoins us. I would assume he’ll rejoin us for portions of tomorrow, but we’ll see how far he gets.”
It’s encouraging to see that McCain will be returning to practice tomorrow, even if it is only for a portion, as it was to see McCain taking part in the pregame shootaround for the scrimmage. With his Maxey-esque smile painted across his face, McCain is in good spirits and seems excited to return to the court with his teammates.
