The Browns boasted the best defense in the league last season, but the same couldn’t be said about the offense, so they opted to make a change at offensive coordinator this offseason.
Alex Van Pelt held the position since 2020, but Cleveland parted ways with him following its 45-14 loss to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
The team has since named Ken Dorsey its new offensive coordinator and he has been getting some positive early reviews from his new playmakers like tight end David Njoku.
“It is juicy,” Njoku said, via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. “I am not going to say anything else. Leave it at that. But I’m really excited for this year.”
Njoku was one of the few bright spots on offense a year ago, registering a career-high 81 catches for 882 yards and six touchdowns, all while playing with five different starting quarterbacks.
The Pro Bowl tight end will have to readjust with QB Deshaun Watson returning to the starting lineup and a new offensive system, but he seems to be optimistic heading into the 2024 season.
Dorsey has spent the past five seasons with the Bills, getting the most out of QB Josh Allen. The Browns are hoping he can do the same thing with Watson, who has underwhelmed in his first two years in Cleveland.
Since joining the team in 2022, Watson has played in just 12 games and thrown only 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
An improved Watson will help Njoku take his game to another level in 2024 as well as a tight end friendly offense, which Dorsey has run.
Over the past two seasons, Buffalo’s tight ends have combined for 154 catches for 1,493 yards and 12 touchdowns during Dorsey’s stint as offensive coordinator.
That has given Njoku hope for his future with the Browns as he has just two years left on his current deal.
“I appreciate the city of Cleveland tremendously,” Njoku added. “Becoming a man here, there’s a lot that entails. It’s so much deeper than just that statement. You get me? So, yeah, I’m blessed. I’m truly blessed to be here.”
